it will be a moon based society absent of money people will be recruited there from universities full of "students who think they can change the world" they will not be paid they'll only be given the challenge of working at what they love to do in one of the most difficult environments in the universe the cold, dark face of the luna we'll use proffessional weed growers to help run a hydroponics lab as well as some biologists to design a greenhouse engineers for the superstructure of the domes carpenters for the actual production of the place miners to extract the materials needed geologists to find out what those materials are and so on all will not be paid all will recieve their own rooms designed by engineers built by carpenters and food produced by the growers and engineered by biologists it's like communism in space i believe it will work for a few reasons deep down, i believe there are a lot of people (not everyone) who are good at what they do and want to do it... they don't care about how much money they make it's a challenge, something the human race hasn't had for decades it has to work, it's either that, or our race is doomed to sitting on this overpopulating earth, progressing only when business believes it to be profitable. the place will be called "new babylon" after "civilization's" birthplace and will consist of some residential domes, a hydroponics lab (probably on the other side of the moon) along with a massive solar panel array for power. the main focus of the civilization will be to first create the first extra terrestrial human environment, and second would be to see through the first human mission to mars. the u.s. military will tell you "be all that you can be" by living through vigorous training, earning medals and promotions, but i say that you can be more than that by doing what i am proposing... what do you think?

questions...
I:selling the future
are we doomed? i know, i sounds like a stupid question, but i believe there is some validity to it. it seems that humanity in general, but more specifically the west has reached a dreadful lull in progression. this progression is not that of a society, or of technology, but simply one in morale and spirit. the human race -- to me at least -- is dead or dying. sure, only a few weeks ago someone invented dvd ram and a 360mb hard disc smaller than a penny, but what is coming of it? we have a natural drive, no, a need to "seek out and explore" and to learn; ulysses' "to strive to seek to find, and not to yield" is in our blood and our blood is slowly thinning. why are we poking around inventing the newer, the smaller and the faster? what is the purpose? we, as a people have lost a common goal and forgotten who we are. we have become slaves to the one thing left to hold us together: greed and the almighty dollar. it is said that marketing will be the future, and i'm not sure -- no -- i know i don't want to be a part of that future. whatever happened to the need to know, to explore and to create? was it all snuffed out by greed? are we as a people becoming that shallow? the human race has lost its way -- whatever that may be, it has lost a purpose and as a result, we have fallen away to an endless routine of what has come to be called "the daily grind". nothing is spawned from human genius, nothing is new, only improved upon and nothing is done anymore for the good of all mankind, only for the good of the sponsor... how terribly sad. the world is getting darker and i wonder if there will ever be light again...
II:welcome to the jungle
does the internet truly mark the beginnings of a world community and government? a world without borders, nations, or races exists today, on line, devoid of discrimination or governing body, uncontrollable and entirely expandable, is it possible that the internet will act as a staging point for a new human community? what is it in our society that fears anarchy?
III:the virtual wasteland
i'm a big fan of star trek... i know almost everyone else isn't, but that doesn't change my mind. a part of today's movie deeply bothered me because of something i saw through the eyes of gene roddenberry. they are a race known as "the borg" an invention of roddenberry's introduced into the star trek series sometime late in the first season. they are a race without individuals, without personal thought and without freedom. there is no religion, there is only efficiency. there is no freedom, there is only production. and these beings are the strongest in the universe. they are the strongest because they are efficient. all thoughts are processed instantaneously and one completely logical decision is made, without error. they represent the epitome of the perfect fusion between man and machine. a flawless integration... almost. you see the federation still beat them. to be honest, the images of singapore scared the hell out of me, with new laws regulating the movement of pedestrians and cars, and hundreds of factories working with only seven or eight engineers at the helm. at what point does a society step over the line and move from humanity to machinery? in our future will our lives be limited to our work week? i'm wondering if our future will be like that of the borg, if our endless pursuit for efficiency will eventually override our need for art, or community, or faith. i'm wondering if our future is riddled with images of thousands of drones, working as a whole, to make this planet run faster, and smoother maybe even exploring the stars, but not as a race wanting to explore, but as a machine requiring more information to achieve perfection... that is my question, and the answer is scaring me. reaction unlike most of the people in my class, this series deeply disturbed me. perhaps this is because i do not truly belong here, among all the computers, fashioning web pages in director presentations. i am instead a student of humanity, of society, of faith and of our most basic thoughts, and to me, the future is a frightening thought. in the future i do not see what the people of singapore see, with their tall, smooth skyscrapers and fully efficient networks, i see the human race in chains. but the chain will not be a physical one, i see the chain clinging to something far more important our souls. even now people give up their lives to machines, choosing to interact with it rather than the person next to them. one of the scariest images i believe i will ever see is in this very school's lab, blank featureless faces staring into a dead fourteen inch screen not talking to each other sending email to someone 3000 miles away but ignoring everyone around them all too reminiscent of the endless corridor of monkeys at typewriters. we are becoming a hive of efficiency a strong, tireless machine discarding the ageing or outdated parts is that all that we've become? parts? we as a people not a nation or a community but as a people are slowly losing the ability to interact to commune. we are instead replacing this ability with networks of lifeless "contacts". in our future there may be no friends no one to turn to when you need it no one made of flesh anyway. nothing can replace human contact nothing technology has attempted to do this, and as of now it is succeeding. ask yourself this: do you know your neighbours? i don't. neither do my parents or my brother and i am the only one who is online. we have lost the ability to come together to truly interact that is what is causing the apartheid. it is too easy now to ignore those who are not like us those who think differently or look differently or even smell differently. it is far too easy to shrug off the poor and dismiss their misfortune because we are not forced to deal with it ourselves but the fact remains we are all part of one human family with common characteristics and one soul. technology is simply "making it easier" to forget that and that is wrong.

Subject: Leonardo Da Vinci
I went to the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit at the royal canadian museum in Victoria, B.C. recently and, expecting a wonderous journey into the mind of a great man, got something that was not even close to the hype surrounding it. I saw a bunch of art and diagrams that were reproductions of famous works by Da Vinci and it really disappointed me that they put most of these works(which were maybe 2" by 3") into a frame that was 3' by 4'. You couldn't really appreciate the artwork and detail of these Da Vinci recreations because the wasted space made me feel as such. To be perfectly honest with you, this was not worth what I paid for the ticket, and except for a few points(the fact that Da Vinci wrote his notes and thoughts backwards to thwart those who would try to copy it was brilliant and the inventions that he made were pretty killer), it was a hurry up excursion to get to the Gift Shop located at the end of the exhibit. I was sickened by this and, when I went to reenter the exhibit to check out points I had missed, I was stopped in my tracks by some bitch security guard. In the Gift Shop were shameless clothing and tacky merchandise baring Da Vinci's image and works. How disgusting! So I said to hell with it and went to the other exhibits offered and found them to be a hell of a lot more interesting than that piece of shit that they call a Da Vinci exhibit. If I had two words for you, they would be don't go.

power, money, influence... these are things that i supposedly want. i have been indoctrinated by my parents, duped into believing this lie, the lie that my destiny lies in politics, or law, or journalism, the long sought after three headed hydra... but i look at my life, i know that i am not happy. i met "my people" today. by "my people" i mean those with whom i feel i belong. they wear berits and other bits of unique clothing. dyed hair and body piercings decorate their bodies and i feel that i'm at home. i'm most comfortable with the artists... the ones who feel and love, not think and analyse as i have been taught to do."but there's no money in it" a little voice whispers in my ear and cringe... it is not my voice. it is the voice of another part of me, one falsely created by the world that surrounds me. i am left to rot among the power hungry the rich and the plastic. John Lennon said it best with "all you need is love". why am i here? why am i wasting my existence here among intellectuals, those who think and memorize? my mind belongs here but my heart does not.(after a response from a friend)i dunno man. to give a general description of what i think would give you a picture of a great big race track of sheep chasing a piece of paper (diploma). this piece of paper allows them to get a job, go to work, compete and live the race day by day, minute by minute, without any time for "self". this entire race is based on the thought of "some day i'll have enough money to have some time to myself". we're trapped here on this godforsaken planet and we can't even be ourselves. we have to conform to the race, be like everyone else, jump through all the hoops, get the piece of paper and cubbyhole ourselves into perfect little jobs... and if we turn to dust before that "one day"... we die and we never lived.that's what i saw in these people, not that i want to pigeon hole myself into that group, i can see where you're coming from, i think what really happened there is i saw a part of me in them that i can't... no, i'm not permitted to be. can you understand how much i would give to leave school, leave canada and hitchhike across europe? i would bring nothing but my book and i would eat whatever i could scrounge taking dead end jobs from ireland to turkey. i would have my artistic piece that is so oppressed by this shell of a world, i would be me, not what i'm supposed to be. i wouldn't be "dan quinn has achieved the bachelor of art's at simon fraser university", i would be me. you can't put a price on that, you can't say "oh, i'll do that when i have enough money to support myself", because tomorrow is too late... every second that i spend being that piece of paper is the perpetuation of misery and an eternal lie. i could die tomorrow having existed only as a body that took up space, a sheep that didn't live long enough to be pigeon holed into a world where self expression is not only discouraged, but it is in fact almost entirely unwelcome.

Subject: The truth...
This is wrather sad I think... And it is all because of Christians who think they are too good for those who wear different clothing or act different or anything else that is the reason for shunning someone... Jesus is for everyone not just the "typical" christian... There is no such thing as "typical" christian anymore... We are all one with christ whether We are Punks, Goths, Metalheads, average sitizens, preps, from Europe, Asia, Africa, The Americas, Austrailia, or the Carebean... We must begin to care for the Brian Warners of this world before there hearts become cold and hateful... Us as Christians need to stop whinning and complaining that so many people hate us... Well duh! I wonder why they hate us so bad... Obviously people are not seeing Jesus in the majority of Christians in this world... We have to get our hearts right before we even go out there and tell these hurting people about Jesus, they don't need to be hurt anymore... They truely need the love of Jesus... (if you do not understand what I am talking about read below and then read this again... And if for some reason you do not know who Marilyn Manson is then do ask me and I will try and explain...)

Subject: A story...
A true life story of Brian Warner In the mid 1980's, this teenager named Brian Warner began to go to a youth group. He was sort of an awkward kid, and no one really wanted to talk to him. The youth pastor would go over to him, and like do the usual pastor thing, you know, how are you, that's good, and then talk to the other more popular kids. One day they went to an amusement park and the pastor wanted them to be in pairs, but no one wanted to pair with Brian, so he walked the park by himself. The pastor didn't think he really need to talk to Brian because he went to a Christian academy all his life up to eighth grade, and was raised in the church. Brian was at church for about 3 1/2 months, and one day he just stopped coming. Later on about a few years later, the youth pastor had become leader of a seminary, and one of his students was now a youth pastor, and he called him up. He asked his former pastor if he remembered a kid named Brian Warner. The pastor kind of membered the name, but after a bit of description he knew who he was. The guy asked his pastor, do you know who he is now? The former pastor said no. The guy gave him a hint; "He doesn't go by Brian anymore." The pastor was stumped. He replied, "Brian Warner is now Marilyn Manson." This is a true story. As you can tell, the boy in this story, Brian, was shunned by the "Christians" in this youth group. If you think hard enough, if he had been accepted into the group, he might not be what he is today. He is a hurt man. Regardless of his actions, he still has feelings, and truly believes that that is what Christianity is all about. If some could reach him, maybe, just maybe, he could be able to bring millions of teenagers into Heaven, instead of leading down the road to hell. Just something to think about... Send this to all your friends. Let them know, that no matter how weird or awkward the person may seem, never ever be a snob towards them. They may need your love.

Subject: Jerry Falwell
Jerry Falwell recently told the entire world that Tinky-Winky, a character on the children's show Teletubbies, was gay. He pointed out many things that appeared to him, such as Tinky being purple(the gay pride color) and that he had a triangle shaped antennae(the gay pride symbol). Well, Mr. Falwell, I have some things to tell you. Number 1: Tinky-Winky is not gay. First, he is purple because purple is very calming to children(they've done studies at major universities). It is not because it is the gay pride color as you have stated. Second, his antennae is a coat-hanger(you know, the kind you had on your TV when you went by the name Cletus), not the gay pride symbol as you have stated. By your twisted logic, and guiding for telling who's gay and who's not in children's television, Barney would be a homosexual pedophile. Let's review the facts: One, he is purple(the gay pride color). Second, he hangs out in a school room with seven little kids and no adult supervision. Personally, I think it delves deeper with you, Mr. Falwell. You're just a racist. That's all. You don't go after Barney because he's American and you go after Tinky-Winky because he's British. It is exactly the same thing that you pulled when you went after Larry Flynt and Hustler. You went after him because he is an atheist, while you spared High Hefner and Bob Guccione because, even though they threw wild parties at their respective mansions, they were religious men. You are nothing more than a racist, Mr. Falwell. What's even worse is that intelligent people print your crap because you are the moral majority. Guess what: To me you're nothing but a two-bit sinner and another snake in sheep's clothing. But you have the right to say what you said, and I did my part by offering a differing view. So, Mr. Falwell, I got two words for you: SUCK IT!

Subject:The Management of the Chicago Bulls
I am a Chicago Bulls fan. Well, I wish I could still say that. Even though the NEW Bulls are 3-7 and they are a far cry from the team of yesteryear, I try and remain faithful to the red, black, and white. But why? Jerry Krause betrayed us as fans by selling off the team, getting rid of Phil Jackson(the best coach in the NBA), and letting Michael retire and Scottie and Dennis go to different teams. Did the weight of all those championship rings you're sporting get to be too much for your fingers? Did all the money that fans poured in to your coffers get to be too much? What's the deal? You took the best team in basketball and busted them up, and for what? Just so you could give your buddy Tim Floyd a job? That's a pretty sad excuse, man. You took the World Champions of Basketball and you sold them off like cattle because you hated the farmer and shepherd. You are a sad human being, Jerry Krause, and I hope the world backlashes on you for what you've done. You showed the fans that they don't mean anything to you and your team, so enjoy watching the Bulls play from any seat in the arena...because, as of now, that is the way it's gonna be. No more sellouts, no more stars, no more words of praise, nothing. So enjoy your life, Jerry Krause. Enjoy what you have done. See you at the draft, when you have to show up to make a top ten selection of a player who couldn't even hold The Champs' jockstraps. Two words, Jerry Krause: SUCK IT!

Subject: forever lost in my thoughts
I'm sorry to dump this all on you but I need to get it out and I didn't know who else to go to.....
I wonder what people will think about when I'm gone. I wonder what they will say. Will they be sad and miss me? How could they miss me when they didn't even know me? Sure people think they know who I am but no one knows my thoughts and feelings. They don't know what it's like to go through a day with my thoughts and dreams. I have so many that I get so confused that I don't even know half the things I'm thinking. Why do I do this to myself? Why don't I let someone in to every part of my life? Well I guess you could say I tried to do that once and now my so called best friend is preoccupied and doesn't have time to talk to me everyday or even get into a serious conversation once in a while like we used to. I can't even trust her with a secret anymore because she's so immature that if I don't tell her not to tell anyone, she goes and blabs it to everyone and then acts like it was no big deal. Oh, and then there's my sister. Me and her were so close and we told each other everything. Now she's preoccupied too and I barely ever see her. She says she's going to miss me when she goes to college but I don't see how she can. Doesn't she miss me now? She doesn't even know me anymore. Or doesn't she notice that I'm still here everyday all alone because she doesn't have time for me? Well I guess I'll end like this...Will they miss me? Or will they wait until it's too late to finally figure out that they do?

This sure makes you stop and think!!
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life, not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We've conquered outer space, but not inner space; we've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul; we've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We have higher incomes, but lower morals; we've > become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure, but less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition. These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom; a time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to make a difference, or to just hit delete...Saludos.
